1. Why do we care about what happens to Max and Kevin? How does the author make us care about them?

2. How does the location of Max's room "down under" relate to how he feels about himself?

3. How does Freak get Max out of his room? What is "magic" about their quests?

4. Does Freak really believe that he will be "the first bionically improved human" by having a body transplant? What does Freak mean when he says "you can remember anything, whether it happened or not"?

  1. The location of Max's bedroom relates to him in a mean way. Down under relates to him because he's at the lower part of his school. So it makes him feel "down under." It would stink to be him. Everyone reminding him. He must feel so bad. Poor guy. He has my sympthy.

  2. Max's bedroom relates to him because he feels down, and blue. People make fun of his size and when he's down there the world is shut out. No one other than him would go down there until Kevin came along. People would yell down there to get his attention. It was down and it was his space to get away from all the mean people. If I went down there I would be scared. It is probably cold and lonely. On the bright side if you need some privisy you would have it for sure. Even though every time you go down there you would think of all the mean things that people say about you. It must be terrible to go down there every day and be all alone thinking all you have for friends that aren't realated to you is Keven and Gwen.

  3. Max's bedroom relates to him in a bad way. He calls his room the down under for many reasons I think. One may be that he thinks that he's a monster and must be kept "down under". He might also call it that because he thinks that he is to stupid to be kept up in the open.
I think that Max really should be more positive. He is not a monster he is just a misunderstood person. I think that he should make a lot more friends. Since Freak is his friend now I think that he will be more positive.

  4. We care about what happens to Max and Kevin because they are the main characters who don't have any friends but each other. If they got hurt when Blade was chasing them on page 28-40, the story would have been way different. The author makes us care about them because they don't have many friends. They have a strong bond to each other and their family. They have a friendship many people don't have. They have fun everyday of the summer, page 44-47. Even if one goes through a hard time I'm positive the other will be there for him. When they were getting chased and got away, they found something they both enjoyed, Kevin on Max's shoulders and Kevin telling him where to go. I say this because on pages 48 and 49, Max has Kevin up on his shoulders, Kevin blocking Max's sight, and going on a quest. {They were really just crossing the street}. They have a lot of fun being Freak the Mighty, and that's why we care about them.

  5. The location of his room relates to how he feels about himself because he feels down under. Every adult knows him as Killer Kane's son. Every kid knows him as Maxi Pad. He also feels left out because he is so big and clumsy. When he is in his basement he feels safe and alone. Nobody can make fun out of him when he is in his basement. If I were him, I would stay in my basement all day. I think it would get boring after a while, but nobody can bother you there.

  6. The magic about there quests is that they always try to do some thing right. Like if there is a person that is in trouble they always come to the rescue. They do the quest to try to show how smart they are. Like that one time when they took that handbag to the girl in the new testaments and it was hers but they found this like biker dude on page.66-67 so after that they invite the boys in to the house that the people are living in for the time. Loretta goes and gets Iggy a beer. Then they stat to talk about his dad and how he killed his mom no how they think he killed his mom. Do any of you think that his dad killed his mom or like could he have been framed by some one?

    1. I think that he is just being framed because later on Max's dad gets out of jail and he would of killed someone by now if he did that to his own wife. Max also would have known it his self and h would have believed it.

  7. The location of Max's bedroom relates to him because he feels down like sad. The "down under" might make him feel even sadder because he has been made fun of because of his height and how he looks. People always yell down there not go down there to get him like on page 6. People are afraid to go down there because of his height except Freak goes down there to get to go on their quests. The "down under" is all his he has the place all to himself he goes down there to just relax and think about what is happening. Max probably feels lonely down there in the "down under" because no one goes down there except him and Freak. Freak only goes down there to get Max to go on the quests. On page 57 he is talking about a cricket in his room so that must mean they don't really take care down there because there is a cricket in his room.

  8. I can relate to do1112 because the way she feels about Max's location of his bedroom I feel the same way. I like how Kevin doesn't care what Max's looks like. He goes about what's inside of him. Kevin's a true friend because of that. I agree about how do1112 thinks it would be cold and lonely. I also agree on how he has privisy . I know because I live down stairs and I have the whole down stairs to myself. It's awesome because you have no littler siblings. It's so sad how whenever he goes stairs and it reminds him of all the mean things people say to him.

  9. Dear Fellow Readers,

Does this book make you think more carefully about your actions and words?

    Great entries!

  10. I think Freak really does believe that he will be the first bionically improved human. I also think that he's hiding something about the surgery. I hope that he is the first bionically improved human. He is so smart, yet so funny.
I think that when Freak says that you can remember anything, even if it happened or not is that you can use your imagination. I agree with Freak. I also think that you can remember anything with an imagination. I wish that I could have one as wild as Freak's

  12. I can relate to ck0220 about how he thinks that the Down Under makes Max feel sad and depressed. I think that Freak {Kevin} would go down there even if they didn't go on quest together. I think that he would because they are great friends. Kevin is the only person who can relate to Max that isn't related to him. I think together they are unstoppable. I've been told that I look like other people, and it doesn't feel good if the person they say you look like, you don't want to look like. I feel bad for Max because people know he doesn't want to be like his dad and they say he does anyway. I think people should just like Max for who he is.

  13. Freak gets Max out of his room by telling him to go on these quests. These quests seem really fun. Like on page 50-53 they are going on a quest to the place where Freak thinks he is going to be the first human robot. Another quest is on page 58-62 they are getting a purse that has fallen into the storm drain and they try to get it out in the purse they find an I.D. The next morning they try to find who the I.D. belongs to. They find the person but they fun into some trouble with them. Their names are Iggy and Loretta and they know Max's dad and Freak's parents. The "magic" of their quests are they use their imagination to create the castle and the moats and things like that.

  14. I'm responding to ck0220. I also think that the quests that Freak and Max go on seem really fun. My favorite quest would probably be the example you gave about pg. 50-53. It's my favorite because I hope that Kevin will be the first human robot.
I also like the quest they go on when they find Loretta Lee's purse that Tony D. stole. I liked that one because it was scary when they met Iggy Lee. I wouldn't want to mess with him. He seems super tough and mean.

  15. We care about Max and Kevin because the both go through tough times. Max thinks that he doesn't have a brain. On the other hand Kevin has really hard opsticles to go through being mentley ill. I think the author makes us care for them in many ways. For an example he makes Kevin small but smart. That makes us care for him by feeling so bad for him. Overall I think they both have tough life.

  16. Freak gets Max out of his room by saying the code and telling him to go on a quest with him. Their quest are very unique. Freak gets made when Max doesn't feel the same way he does about going on quest everyday. Kevin yells at Max before they go on quest to hurry up and eat. Max doesn't mind going on quest everyday because Freak is his best friend. Make that his only friend. The magic of the quest is very important because they loose themselves in one. They don't think of where they really are, but where they imagine they are. They once thought they were on a rope and about to die, when really they were crossing the street. The magic is always with them.

  17. I'm responding to do1112 on October 12. I agree with you that Max is feeling down. The "down under" is making him feel even more down. Yes, people make fun of his size and how he looks. When he goes down to the "down under" he feels some what better because no one will make fun of him down there. It would be pretty scary down there but hopefully you would get over that and just talk. Yes, you would have privacy but it would be lonely. Yes, you would think of all the mean thing but you would get over that. Yes, that would be terrible but at least you had some friend to talk to.

  18. We care about what happens to Kevin and Max because its like they are our own friends. After reading about them you don't want them to get hurt or anything. It is like we just met them and they are our new best friends. Nobody wants their best friend to get hurt. Not even if you were mad at him.
The author makes us care about them by explaining them in so much detail its like they are real. He wants us to be the characters friend. He makes us want to be friends with them because no one else will be friends with them.

  19. I am responding to nk0822 on October 14. I agree with you on how Freak believes that he will be the first bionically improved human. He has a lot of hope on that. I think that he will be the first person to do that. I think that everything will go right and the surgery will work. Then Freak will be a normal child. Then he can go on more quest with Max. I bet that Max is happy about his surgery too.
