Welcome to the Freak the Mighty blog.
You will be blogging 3 times a week during this novel unit.  Every week I will post 3 questions.  You will respond  to 2 of the 3 questions that I post.  Your third entry for the week will be a response to another student's entry.  Remember that when you are responding to another student's blog you are commenting positively and appropriately.

Blogging rules -
  1. Use appropriate language.
  2. You may only blog about the book.  Nothing personal!
  3. You will not post any personal information (use first names only).
  4. Use proper grammar and spelling.
  5. Use evidence from the novel to support your answers.
You must respond to 2 of the 3 following questions or thoughts -

1. Why is Max convinced he does not have a brain? Is his assessment of himself as a "butthead" correct?

2. Do our opinions of ourselves affect what others think of us? Do others' opinions of us affect how we feel about ourselves?

3. Why does Max call the first chapter of his book, "The Unvanquished Truth"?

19 comments:

  1. Max calls the first chapter of his book "The Unvanquished Truth" because Max and Freak are meeting each other for the first time. They are learning how the other was treated. Max was talking about how he wasn't the smartest kid and he became friends with Freak, a kid with a lot of brain. They both seem to get along with each other. Max got made fun of because he is so tall and bigger than everyone else. Freak was made fun of because he was so smart. He called it "The Unvanpuished Truth" because Freak let Max "barrow" his brain and Freak called it the unvanquished truth. He named it this because of Freak.

  2. Yes, our opinions affects what people think about us. Like on page 1 Max is saying he has never had a brain until Freak came along. Max is always putting himself down like on page 4 he is calling himself a butthead. No one would ever call themself a butthead, you might get mad about yourself but you never call yourself a name. Yes, others' opinions affect how we feel about ourselves. You might be thinking well I fit right in her then all of a sudden you hear this that someone who you thought you fit right in with is calling you something or telling lies that you didn't do. Like on page 20 the Fair Gwen was asking Max if he had seen Kevin or Freak and once Freak came out Gwen pulled Freak away really fast in the wagon and Max felt bad. He has been picked on all the time for how big he was and that he looked so much like his father. Then all of a sudden his buddy from day care moves back in and their having fun talking and then his mom comes over and she is like man this boy is so tall why is is hanging out with my son that must of made Max feel even worse about himself.

  4. I totally agree with you ck0220. No one would call themselves a name in real life. Most people might get mad at themselves a lot, but not that bad. I feel sorry that people would treat Freak like that.

  5. Max must feel really terrible about himself. Like ck0220 said he called himself a butthead on page 4, I saw it on page 7. I think it's terrible how people have to keep putting themselves down.

  6. Yes, I think that what we think of ourselves affects how others think of us. It probably affects how others look at us because they might understand why we feel that way or they might try to cheer you up or change your view on yourself. For example on page 1 when Max calls himself a "butthead" people might feel that it's true because Max doesn't stick up for himself or share his ideas. Another example is on page 29 when Max and Kevin meet Tony D., Tony thinks he's a hot shot and others are scared of him for that reason.
Yes, others opinions also affect how we view ourselves. They affect us because you might think that if somebody other than your mom and dad say it, it must be true. For example on page 3 when Gram tells Grim that Max is starting to look more and more like his dad, that makes Max feel both mad and sad because he doesn't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I also think that what others say doesn't matter all that matters is what we think.

  7. Max is comvinced that he doesn't have a brain because he isn't that smart. Then Freak comes and he is really smart so it sounds like Max isn't very smart. Everyone is smart, you might not think they're smart but everyone is smart in their on way. No, Max's assement of him being butthead is not true. I think that because no one is a butthead. You might think that, but it's not true everyone is nice no matter what. Like I might think that someone is a butthead only because I'm mad at them for something they did or somethimes they just get on my nerves but then I always forgive and forget. So no matter what anyone calls you, you always konw hopefully they forgive and forget.

  8. I agree with your do1112 nobody should have to go through life putting yourself down all the time. If you do how are you ever going to have self confidence? If you don't have any self confidence how are your suppose to succeed in life? I think that Max will change his opinion though about himself being a "butthead".
I also agree with your opinion about what other people saying about you has an affect on you. I know that sometimes I think think that if my parents say that then it must be true. Sadly though that isn't always the truth. I also think that you should trust your parents since the case of them not telling the truth is very seldom.

  9. Max is convinced that he doesn't have a brain because he is not smart at all. Compared to Freak Max is like a second grader. Also because Freak pretty much controls him everywhere he goes. Max puts Freak on his shoulders and then Freak tells him which way to go by kicking him on that side, like on page 32. I think that calling Max a butthead is half correct. He is not smart at all, and he can't read very well. He is very big, but even because of those things he should not call himself a butthead. I think that he has a hidden talent that we will find out later in this book.

  10. Yes i do think that what we think of our selfs affects us. It cuts down our cinfadince and we feel like life is not worth living for. Or at least that is how i feel. i think that is happening to max and he only has one thing to look forward to every day. I also think that what other people think help shape us onto who we are. There is also hate in some of those words can be hate full. They can hurt people too. They also can help to like i said befor.

  11. Your opinion is way different then anyone else.
I think you are great the way made. People can't judge in any way. Your perfect the way you are. Gods loves and he made you for a reason.
I think Max's creativity is amazing. That he thought that the disosauerbrain was the size of a peanut. But they still ruled the earth.

  12. Yes I think that our opinions of ourselves affect what others think of us. If you think you are not good in football, then you probably won't try. Then you probably will do bad if your not trying. So nobody will want you on their team because you don't try. Then you will be a last pick so you will feel bad. Also I think that other people opinions affect what we feel about our selves, because if I was fast, but everyone told me I was slow. I would probably believe them. That would take away a lot of my self confidence if I thought I was fast. If you don't listen to what other people say though, I think you might beat them because you have self confidence.

  13. I'm responding to nk0822. I agree on what you said about if we put ourselves down others will two. You are right that Max is always putting himself down and that he won't stick up for himself. It's a great thing that Max has Freak, even though Freak is small he will stick up for his big friend. For example on pages 34-40 Freak is helping Max get away. You are right on why people are afraid of Tony D, also known as Blade, on page 36. You're right if other people call us names we might go and call ourselves names. A text to self connection you made me think of is people think I look like my dad too. No one should have anyone else put them down.

  14. Max is convinced that he doesn't have a brain because he has no friends. Also no one will talk to the poor guy. He say he doesn't have a brain until Kevin came along. So he barrows Kevin’s. He calls himself "butthead" because he think that he doesn't have a smart brain. Kevin is a nice friend because he accepts Max as a friend. But I think he has great ideas. But the big dude doesn't believe in himself.

  15. (posted on sever 10/7/09) The reason why Max thinks he is a butthead is because he has been called a butthead before. The thing i don't get is why thinks he is a butthead just because someone has called you that, you should ask your self are you what that person called you. He can talk, can't he people also think he is a jerk he is just messed up and he can't think straight. I think that Max is miss under stud. Once you get to know him he is not that bad. I also wonder why his dad went to jail. I think that he might have killed his mom. Max is really smart he just needs help with his school work. That Is what I think.

  16. I am responding to nk0822 on October 7. I agree with you that other people will put you down. You hope it won't happen to you but it happens to everone. You're right that Max won't stick up for himself. That's why he gets picked on because he won't stand up for himself. Yes, others are scared of Tony D. When Freak and Max run into him and his gang Freak tells Max where to go with his feet. I agree that nothing matters it's only what matters to you. Like if someone calls you a name you know it's not true because you know that you are the best person you can be.

  17. Max is convinced that he is a "butthead" because he no one is friends with him. He thinks he doesn't have any friends because he thinks that he has stupid ideas. I would be friends with him though. He sounds like a great kid.
His assessment is completely wrong. He has very good ideas and is smart. He just doesn't share them. I think that Freak will help him realize his potential.

  18. Im responding to nk0822. nk0822 is so nice for offering to be friends with him. I would also do the same. There's something about Max that reminds nk082. I'm not sure what it is but pops in my head for some reason.
I think nk0822 is right about how Max's assessment is completely wrong. My person thoughts are that needs more self confedence.

  19. I agree with gk1221 on October 9, about how our opinions and others effect us. Everyone is great the way they are. People should not judge you just because you are different. They should respect you they way you are. God made each person different for a reaseon. If a person dislikes you for being different, just forget about them. Everyone is unique in their own way. Otherwise if we were all the same, there would be no point to life.
